2021 Greener Greenspace Profile

Village Community Garden

Located in Guelph, ON, the Village Community Garden is run as a co-operative garden for members to grow food, gain gardening and food foraging skills and build community.

Design and Process

The Village Community Garden is a newly created community garden in a food insecure area in the City of Guelph. The garden was established by volunteers with the goal of operating the garden as a co-operative run by members. The idea is that co-op members would gain gardening and food literacy skills, an understanding of the food forest, as well as community leadership experience.

The garden is built on top of an unused development field, so the garden members used a lasagna method with screened soil and compost. To prepare the beds for the following season, they planted organic buckwheat. Future plans include growing additional native plants to attract bees and other beneficial insects to pollinate the vegetable gardens.

Community Collaboration

Since the garden began in spring 2021, the focus has been on connecting with local families and exploring forest foods such as puffballs and wild grapes. Summer students assisted with the development of the garden by spreading soil, wood chips, compost, etc. As the garden is centrally located, the hope is that in the future it will be used as a demonstration garden in an urban landscape.
